In the official trailer for the musical Cyrano directed by Joe Wright, Peter Dinklage sings and sword fights like the brand new Cyrano de Bergerac.
MGM has released a trailer for Cyrano, featuring a sword-wielding Peter Dinklage. The source material is the famous and often imitated piece Cyrano de Bergerac, written in 1897 by the French playwright Edmond Rostand. The story tells the story of a noble junior and the grotesquely large nose of a talented poet leading to debilitating self-doubt. Cyrano longs for his friend Roxanne but is so ashamed of her appearance that he uses his poetry to help the stupid Christian court her instead.
In the next Cyrano, the source of the blacksmith’s self-awareness does not come from an unsightly facial appendage but rather from his achondroplasia, a form of dwarfism. Peter Dinklage will play the role of Cyrano, with Haley Bennett and Kelvin Harrison Jr. joining Roxanne and Christian. Bashir Salahuddin and Ben Mendelsohn will also appear in the film. Cyrano marks a return to period romance for director Joe Wright, who rose to fame while directing Pride and Prejudice (2005) and Atonement (2007).
Now the Cyrano Twitter account released the official trailer for the film. “Live the greatest love story ever toldThe caption reads. The trailer shows Dinklage at his most heroic, responding to taunts of ‘you are a monster“with a certain mastery of the sword. Yet the poet in love is plagued by doubt:”The world will never accept someone like me and a tall, beautiful woman. Christian’s appearance halfway through the trailer only complicates matters for Cyrano. Check out the unrequited desire below:

Unlike the original piece, Cyrano will notably be a full-scale musical, featuring songs composed by Bryce and Aaron Dessner of The National. The new trailer highlights some of the music featured in Cyrano and elaborate choreography in the middle of the sumptuous European decor. Haley Bennett first showcased her singing skills in 2007 Music and lyrics.
Rostand’s play has been reinvented many times, inspiring many film adaptations. The 1987 comedy Roxanne, starring Steve Martin and Daryl Hannah wearing prosthetics, adds a happy ending that departs from the tragic play. Other more modern stories, like the one from Netflix Sierra Burgess is a loser and LGBTQ included Half of it, bring texting and cat fishing to the familiar story. Yet in most versions of the play, Cyrano’s replacement is known for his comically large nose or, in modern adaptations, the bane of unpopularity. Dinklage’s portrait will indeed be less superficial than an actor wearing a rubber nose. The scenario probably also takes on a personal valence for Dinklage; it was written by his wife Erica Schmidt, who reinvented Cyrano as a character with dwarfism with her husband in mind to play the lead role. The public can see Dinklage’s Cyrano in December when the film is released in select theaters.
