It was a nuclear moment, when millions of women around the world took to social media and announced #MeToo. Liberating and devastating waves are still spreading across different industries as more and more people (mostly men) are blamed. Kevin Spacey is one of the biggest names, recently pleading not guilty to four counts of sexual assault at the Old Bailey. He is due to stand trial on June 6, 2023.

But lighting that bomb in the air was the Pulitzer winner New York Times investigation of Harvey Weinstein by Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey (with Ronan Farrow at the new yorker). On October 5, 2017, the day they were published, the underside of abuse and assault was revealed and the world changed forever.

With these revelations, cultural consciousness was not slow to change: broadcast on television (dark silver, The morning show), Literature (my dark vanessa), and – of course – movies (The wizard, Bomb). #MeToo has become a genre or trope unto itself, putting more emphasis on storylines involving sexual assault and consent issues.

But it took five years for the inevitable film adaptation of Kantor and Twohey’s story, documented in their 2019 book. She says, to finally arrive in cinemas. Here’s everything we know about the film.

What is the She says ground?

Standing on the cinematic shoulders of journalistic dramas like Projector and All the President’s Men, She says follows Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey as they delve into Hollywood sexual assault rumors and allegations. Most of the stories were about hotel rooms, bathrobes and massages.

The difficulty lies in people’s willingness to speak up – especially victims and survivors, who signed non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) that protected the abusers. The resolution is to persuade them that their testimony would prevent others from doing harm. According to reports, the film would not focus on Harvey Weinstein, but on the journalists who were threatened and intimidated for their efforts to expose him.

Writing the screenplay is Rebecca Lenkiewicz, whose back catalog includes small ax,The whirlwind, Disobedience, Colette and Ida. Maria Schrader (Unorthodox) directed.

Who is in the She says cast?

After her Oscar-nominated role in Promising young womanCarey Mulligan is perfectly cast as NY Times reporter Megan Twohey. The big sick and The Plot Against America star Zoe Kazan plays Twohey’s co-worker, Jodi Kantor. Patricia Clarkson (Sharp objects) plays Investigations Editor Rebecca Corbett, joined by Brooklyn nine-nine‘s Andre Braugher as Editor-in-Chief Dean Baquet.

Laura Madden, the first woman to speak on the Kantor and Twohey record, is played by Sainte Maud actress Jennifer Ehle. Samantha Morton (The Walking Dead) features Zelda Perkins, a former aide to Weinstein who exposed him in the 90s before signing an NDA. Keilly McQuail (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) is credited as the voice of Rose McGowan, one of Weinstein’s most vocal accusers. And Mike Houston (Orange is the new black) is listed as representing Weinstein, although it is unclear to what extent he will feature.
