After publishing the “Sonic Cupof its trailer, which sped up the footage and added some hilarious visuals, we now have what’s called the “final trailer” for Sonic 2. The trailer gives us a better idea of Robotnik’s evil new plan, how difficult this battle is for Sonic and Tails, and Knuckles, who is definitely NOT out to make friends.
“Oh lord, there are two now.”
What should be a gorgeous tropical backdrop for a wedding is interrupted by Sonic (Ben Schwartz) and Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) crushing the event in a pile of snow. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) is back, and he’s aided by “The Winter Soldier”, an echidna named Knuckles (Idris Elba) who doesn’t take kindly to being called a porcupine.
While many of the clips from the trailer are the ones we saw, some really harrowing moments were added in to give more context. We see that Tom (James Marsden) and Maddie (Tika Sumpter) are there when the Death Egg Robot attacks, for example, and the all-out brawl between Sonic and Knuckles feels like it’s about to explode off screen.
Can I just say this movie looks like it beats the Sonic shit? My poor boy takes shots right and left! You really get the feeling that he is still very new in this area compared to Knuckles, who is a warrior trained to engage in combat. Honestly? It’s a fantastic way to show off the fights they’ve had in video games, although of course in games we were limited to jump attacks.
It’s not just Knuckles that does significant damage
While we knew Robotnik was coming back to cause trouble, this trailer reveals he’s not just using his robots against Sonic and Tails. Looks like he’s using the power of the Master Emerald himself! He has glowing green eyes and bolts of green energy that he shoots to destroy everything around him. It even flies!
That’s a lot to contend with because it means Robotnik is a threat with and without its technology. The real question is when in the film, does this emerald-powered Robotnik go on the attack? Is it before or after the Death Egg Robot? Also, are the heroes going to have to deal with him being fed like that AND Knuckles at the same time? !
Theories and general fangirling
The music in this trailer makes me so happy. It looks EXACTLY like one of the Robotnik themes from the video games (I personally get a bit of that theme vibes here). Also? Little nods like Tom’s ringtone and the Sonic snowboard are a nice touch.
That said, after watching this trailer, I have even more questions than before. For starters, it looks like Knuckles goes through a ring portal, which only Sonic had access to in the first movie. How did Knuckles get his hands on a ring? More importantly, this seems to be how Knuckles and Robotnik meet, as Knuckles enters a world that resembles the mushroom planet Robotnik was stranded on.
My theory is that Tails was sent by Sonic’s momma owl, Longclaw, to find him, because Knuckles somehow got his hands on a ring. In the first movie, we see the echidnas as adversaries to Longclaw and Sonic, which will lead to an interesting showdown when Sonic and Knuckles meet.
Especially when we come to this next part.
It really looks like Longclaw and/or the owls are connected to the Master Emerald in some way. I know from the video games that Knuckles is the one who protects the emerald, but moments like this really make it seem like something the owls are connected to. Longclaw was in the first movie for a brief time – she brought Sonic to our planet for safety after being chased by echidnas – so it looks like we’re going to get more information about her in this movie.
As. Is she still alive?
